The Delgado Community College Dolphins baseball team is still rebuilding after Hurricane Ida

Let’s talk about how and perpetuating Hurricane Ida has affected sports teams in our region. We know the Saints have been out for a month by the storm and we realize that even after five months, many college teams are still dealing with the day after the storm. A baseball practice at Gatto Community College involved players hitting the tape measure at home and workers breaking a real tape measure while rebuilding the venerable Kirch Rooney Stadium. During Hurricane Ida, the 65-year-old facility was severely damaged. In fact, the day after the storm, we surveyed the property with legendary coach Joe Sherman. Lived with me 2.5 blocks. I knew it was very difficult. Uh, some of the hardest things I’ve been through in my life. So we kind of knew we might be missing out on the outside fence for what it is. But we had no idea about the roof, it looks like a Scud missile in a stadium roof pressure box, and an entire franchise ruined. But understanding what the venue meant, not just for its program, but for the dozens of high school teams who also played games there in the spring. Sherman Duggan and Gone from a baseball coach who is overly busy with his body is learning a lot about paperwork and patients are given a lot of routine. There is no doubt about that. As you know, state insurance is one thing and then you have to make sure everything is coordinated with, with the co-operative endeavour agreement with the city. So, uh, you know, it was a process, but it’s a process that’s finally underway. You know, we got the ceiling today. Uh, once that’s done, the press box will kick in and make our way to the franchise platform, you know, so we’re crawling. We’re not that fast yet, but we’re on our way, making one of the most successful coaches in all of college baseball. Very, very happy between hurricanes and covid. I mean, baseball is something to look forward to. Our children today is our first day. You can tell that, you know, they’re passionate about running and that’s what it’s all about. That’s why we’re here and Joe Sherman really needs to stay on top of his players and contractors renovating his stadium.
