Etihad Airways Introduces World’s First Green Loyalty Program

Etihad Guest, Etihad’s award-winning loyalty programme, has introduced a series of initiatives focused on sustainability to reward members for making “green” choices and provide options to reduce their carbon footprint.

conscious choicesThe new suite of sustainable initiatives offered by the Etihad Guest Program has been created to support Etihad Airways’ sustainability ambition to achieve net zero emissions by 2050and cut 2019 emissions in half by 2035. Passengers who want to travel and spend more consciously and sustainably can earn tier miles and other rewards to make sustainable choices.

By enabling Etihad Guest members to travel with a lighter carbon footprint, Insight Options rewards travelers with tier miles and the additional benefits of carrying less baggage on board and offsetting their travel carbon emissions with Etihad Guest Miles. In their daily lives, when not flying, members can earn tier miles by offsetting daily emissions such as driving, with options ranging from one month to one year of compensation, plus emissions such as cooling your home or cooking your dinner for a month up to a year ; donate miles to a green cause; and by purchasing sustainable products from the Etihad Guest Rewards Shop in partnership with Collinson and CarbonClick. Members can also choose to “go green”, by choosing a digital membership card instead of a membership card. Rewarding members with tier miles helps them keep their current tier or upgrade to a new tier to unlock more benefits.

Etihad Airways is the first airline in the world to reward frequent flyers for being more sustainable in the air and on the ground. Members’ sustainable behaviors are already being internalized so they can be rewarded for balancing their flights with miles and purchasing sustainable products in the Reward Shop, while the full program and benefits will be launched in January 2022.

At the recent Dubai Airshow, Etihad expanded its Strategic Sustainability Program to unite industry leaders including Boeing, Airbus, General Electric and Rolls-Royce in the most comprehensive enterprise aviation sustainability initiative ever implemented.

In October, Etihad Airways operated its most sustainable flight ever, building on the experience gained and efficiencies developed over the past two years to reduce carbon emissions by 72% in absolute terms compared to the equivalent flight operated in 2019.

Over the course of 2021, the consortium expanded its carbon offset program to support the Cordillera Azul National Park project in Peru and the Katingan Mentaya project in Indonesia in partnership with Respira, Shell and CarbonClick.
