The expert behind the popular PlayStation 5 account that has successfully helped thousands of people get the best Sony console ever, has exclusively shared his tips for the coming year.
Those who follow the verified account, PS5 UK Stock On Twitter, I was probably just wondering who is behind the blue tick, and how they gain insider knowledge of all things PlayStation 5.
Well, the Manchester Evening News got a chance to speak to the expert who not only owns the reputable account, which has over 218,000 followers, but also Stock Checker – which tracks console inventory across retailers around the world.
Meet 21-year-old Talha Sonmez.
The avid gamer never expected to be an expert on the subject but found himself in the midst of a worldwide phenomenon, the PlayStation 5, not to mention the owner of a successful British company, and a social media account all before the times. from 25.
Let’s get to know more about who might be the reason for having a PS5 in your house.
Talha, from London, shared his predictions below for this year’s launches, what could happen next for Sony, what retailers are best and worst for stocks, and why he’s dedicating his time to helping others.
where it all started
PlayStation 5 was officially launched in the UK on November 19, 2020 and quickly became the most sought after console.
Its launch was not without problems though.
The coronavirus pandemic as well as inventory and production issues have made it very difficult to get hold of the PlayStation 5.
Covid-19 also meant that fewer employees were working at Sony’s factories producing game chips and building consoles, resulting in a slower production rate.
Then came the global shortage of chips as well, which meant there weren’t enough chips being produced to make more consoles.
Talha noticed this issue, so he created a PS5 Stock UK Twitter account on December 3, 2020, after he was able to secure his PS5.
“I wanted to help other players acquire their own games rather than face the difficulties of not being able to buy one, especially before Christmas for those who celebrate it,” Talha said.
“It was all an emotional help, from one player to many other players.”
Due to his mission to help others, his following started to increase and Talha was quickly flooded with messages asking where and when the best place to get PS5 was.
Best and Worst PlayStation 5 Restocking Retailers
According to Talha, Amazon has been the top retailer when it comes to dropping the PS5 online.
why? Next day delivery.
Although their sales were for Amazon Prime members only, users were able to participate by subscribing to a 14-day free trial, that way they could also have all the products they ordered delivered the next day.
Talha also explains that with Amazon making standalone consoles, no bundles (PS5 addon plus game) and fast servers, this means the website doesn’t crash for users.
“If I were to rank in the top three, I would say Amazon is the best overall,” he said.
“PS Direct and BT will tie for second place for the invite-only drop because they both also have powerful servers, and a smooth shopping/queuing experience, with both standalone and good packages, and I would say Very would be in third place.”
Not every retailer has gotten online discounts right, says Talha, and many customers have been frustrated when it comes to trying to get their PS5 from these sites.
“Someone’s definitely Carrie,” he said.
“Their VIP invite program was terrible. Token winners had to wait about two months to get their PS5, while customers from other retailers would get their software within two weeks of ordering, even a few days.”
A Currys spokesperson responded to this and said: “The Currys PS5 VIP Program is designed to give real customers the ability to purchase the much-desired console by removing the bot problem and reducing the risk of speculators.
After registering online, customers were notified once the PS5 customization for Currys was available and ready for in-store collection with their unique code.
“Our PS5 VIP program has been highly praised by both customers and the tech industry for the fairness of the process.
“We experienced a two-week delay in delivering some consoles to stores for assembly to customers in Fall 2021, however, only 1% of total PS5 customers were affected by this delay. We apologize to all affected customers for the inconvenience it has caused.”
AO has also received complaints about not adding an “add to cart” button on their PS5 online bundles.
“It was like that since the PS5 was officially launched until recently, they just started showing the button to customers,” Talha explained.
“For about a year or so, we’ve had to find and explain techniques to bypass the don’t push button and add the console to your cart, through HTML/item checking tricks.”
Talha says GAME is a retailer that has many repeat points online from the PlayStation 5, but that doesn’t mean they were necessarily good.
“Yes, they drop a lot but the packages they give are ridiculous.
“It includes PlayStation merchandise with 95% of customers (my audience) who don’t want to have these, as well as expensive bundles with games at full price even if the game is cheaper to buy on its own, literally than GAME themselves.
“They also offer a staggering £10 and £20 delivery fee, which I find ridiculous, especially for a product where customers pay more than £500 for it.”
AO and GAME have been contacted for comment.
Demand for PS5
The demand was not only caused by the global chip shortage and the epidemic, but also by the price.
Talha said: “The PS5 is more affordable for the performance it offers, compared to the PS4 or PS3 when they were first released starting at £500-600 when they were new.
“This time Sony has taken the idea of ’make it affordable so everyone has one approach’ where they won’t make a lot of money, which will then make their money from subscriptions and games, increasing their user base and revenue.”
Talha also saw the demand as well.
Three months after creating a Twitter account, PS5 Stock UK, Talha launched Stock Checker.
The site tracks the availability of game consoles, from PS5 to Xbox, Nintendo and more, across a variety of UK stores and retailers.
Talha added, “As someone with severe OCD, preferably a professional even in hobbies and emotional things, I have decided to take it to the next level by starting Stock Checker to show our audience that I am serious, and here to help.”
The 21-year-old has been playing games since he was eight, and his first consoles were the PlayStation 1 and Nintendo DS Lite in red.
Now, he is the owner of a gaming PC, PS5, Switch OLED, and Oculus Quest 2.
He said, “I have always been interested in technology.
“It’s my biggest interest besides video games and cars. I don’t know how to describe why I’m so interested, I’m just interested.
“I find it really fascinating how technology works, its functionality, how companies compete with each other over it, the list goes on.
“One thing I love, which is probably my favorite part, just like most people, is the unboxing experience.
“A good producer will know how to satisfy you just by trying to open the packaging, and using this new piece of technology for the first time, I love it, if only I could afford every bit of the technology available, I’d take it out of its box all day!”
Talha added, “Personally, I think Covid-19 is here for the long haul and as long as these viruses are around, along with a lack of chips, this problem will happen again in future console versions,” such as the PS6, or even the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro, If Sony plans to make that a reality. “
All this adds, in a way, to Talha’s passion for helping others get the consoles they want.
He said, “They say, do what you love to love and help others, and the rewards will come automatically.
“I feel proud that so many customers come to Stock Checker for the latest console, tech and gaming tips/updates.
“They have every right not to trust Stock Checker, but they do, and they should, because I all help those who want to buy these products for their friends and family, or for themselves, instead of paying crazy prices in the aftermarket.”
