First Monday of 2022 isn’t kind to Mizzou Hoops

Mizzou Football commits shine in the Under Armour All American game
Written by publishing team

If I told you there was a 12-2 basketball team, with two losses to the top 15 and a win over the best team in the country, what do you think? You think this team will be ranked, right? At least, somewhere in the top 20-25 range?

Well, you will. is being. wrong!

Turns out, beating your undefeated opponent to even 8 players (not including your best player) doesn’t count for much in basketball these days – what’s this world to come up with?! Despite last week’s dramatic win, Mizzou didn’t break into the top 25 in an Associated Press poll. They’re knocking on the door, but not quite on the entrance.

Missouri, whose win over South Carolina last Thursday boosted them with just eight active players, went from receiving no votes last week to losing only 25th place.

Missouri (12-2, 1-0 SE Conference) beat the Gamecocks (13-1, 1-1) 70-69 in overtime in a last-second layup by Lauren Hansen. South Carolina, which rebounded with its victory on Sunday, still received 22 out of 30 first-place votes from a national media panel to stay on top in the poll.

The problem here is Miso’s poor non-conference schedule, which is clearly detrimental to their perception in the eyes of some voters. Mizzou is only ranked 44th on NET, which is actually a place lower than last week’s rank (which I didn’t get, but whatever).

However, everyone still underestimated tigers. RPI (Rating Percentage Index) currently has Missouri as the 10th best country team (!!!) according to their scores on the field.

In a bit of positive (perhaps neutral) news, Missouri’s postponed game against Vanderbilt has been rescheduled to later this month.

On the men’s side, it’s definitely worse. As if fighting a 6-7 start wasn’t enough, Mizzou will now be fired for at least 5 more days due to positive COVID-19 cases in the program.

Wednesday’s Tigers game against Mississippi State has been postponed due to coronavirus protocols being enacted within MU after testing positive.

No makeup date has been announced for the match against the Bulldogs. Missouri’s next match scheduled for Saturday is at home against Alabama.

It’s a severe blow to the Tigers, who will now go about 10 days between games, which will make it difficult to regain momentum for a date with #15 in Alabama. Although if it were up to Konzo Martin, maybe Wednesday’s game wouldn’t stop at all?

I won’t even get into that. I’m sure the comments section will adequately analyze it without my unnecessary comment.
