Mizzou Football commits shine in the Under Armour All American game
Written by publishing team

I love GP, you guys. What a man. What a work ethic. What a great coach, an inspiration to so many. And now, what a worthy addition to this year’s class in the College Football Hall of Fame.

In case you forgot, Pinkle has won more games than any previous coach in Meso or Toledo. Led the Tigers to 10 bowls and four conference championship matches in two different conferences, and was twice This is close To lead Mizzou to the National Championship match. But he told a group of reporters and friends/family at Shakespeare on Tuesday afternoon that he wasn’t sure it would be enough to get him in.

From Def Mater at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, who has a close relationship with the GP after working with him on the 100-yard trip.

“It wasn’t because I didn’t believe in me or myself,” Pinkle said Tuesday at Shakespeare’s Pizza on the south side of Columbia, where he visited friends, family and the media. “First of all, I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about it. I don’t get up every day and say, ‘Oh my God, I want to be in the Hall of Fame.’ I didn’t really think I’d get in. And then all of a sudden the box was there.”

He added, “All day long.” [talking about how he found out by a package he’d received on his doorstep], “Every 20 minutes I was in tears.”

From Lila Bromberg on KC Star, after speaking with ex-AD Mike Alden over lunch:

“There is certainly no doubt that the gains and losses speak for themselves,” said Mike Alden, who served as Missouri’s athletic director from 1998-2015. “…But I think if you just take a look at all the gains, you lose the image of what built it all, which is why he deserves to be a Hall of Famer.”

And also from her long and frankly interesting article:

Pinkel’s approach to building the Missouri program centered around systems, something he picked up from James and also instilled in Toledo. One System for Player Development: How to make players stronger, faster, more mentally tough, etc. – to the point where seniors become an extension of assistant coaches. Another for the Foundation: How to train and prepare. Post for academic responsibilities. And so on and so forth.

“My job is to make sure every day as I watch all these things happen that we correct things and commend them,” Binkel said. “We correct things and praise them every day. That’s what I did.”

A few former Pinkel players have shared their love for their coach:
