Jet2 announces important changes that affect all flights and holidays
Written by publishing team

Airlines and tour operators Jet2.com and Jet2holidays have introduced the first set of major operational changes in their quest to reduce carbon emissions.

It includes one of the largest airlines’ carbon offset schemes globally, which puts the group on track to net zero by 2050, in line with government targets. However, the company aspires to bring this date forward.

The travel group has pledged to offset every ton of carbon emissions not already covered by its contribution to existing plans with new commitments.

Jet2.com’s ground operations will also become carbon neutral, making it one of the first European airlines to achieve this milestone, while all offices are carbon neutral and powered by renewable energy.

The initiatives are the first in a series of actions and commitments taken by Jet2.com and Jet2holidays as part of an overall sustainability strategy. This puts the company on a path to reach net zero by 2050, in line with government goals, however the company aspires to bring that date forward.

Other pledges include:

  • The purchase of up to 75 new A321 NEO aircraft will make traveling with Jet2.com and Jet2holidays more efficient by reducing emissions per passenger.
  • Use of UK-produced sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) no later than 2026.
  • An 80% reduction in single-use plastics on aircraft by 2023 (equivalent to removing 11 million single-use plastic items by 2023, plus the nine million single-use items already removed annually prior to 2019).
  • Launch of the Hotel Sustainability Charter from 2023.

Jet2 is already one of the world’s most efficient airlines, including increasing efficiency in its operations, which has saved more than 1.8 million tons of carbon dioxide in the past decade – the equivalent of nearly a million cars being taken off the road for a year.

Steve Hebei, CEO of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays said: “The launch of our carbon offset scheme represents the first major step on our journey to net zero.

“It’s our responsibility to pay for every ton of carbon we export and today’s announcement makes this a reality, which means our customers can rest assured that Jet2.com and Jet2holidays are covered in carbon.”

Mr. Hebei added: “This, however, is just one milestone in our journey to reach our sustainability goals. 2022 also marks the realization of our carbon-neutral ground operations, and we are also working to provide our offices with 100% renewable energy.

“This year we will also continue to take strides to advance our commitment to sustainable aviation fuels as well as our hotel sustainability charter, so that we are more sustainable in the air, on the ground and at the resort.”
