Sharks place Evander Kane on unconditional waivers with intent to terminate contract

The team said the San Jose Sharks put forward Evander Kane into unconditional concessions with the intent to terminate his contract for breaching his NHL standard contract and violating the AHL’s COVID-19 protocols. Kane played for the Barracuda, affiliated with the Sharks’ AHL, this season.

Sources said Kane’s contract termination stems primarily from his travel to Vancouver while on COVID-19 protocol the athlete. Barracuda put Kane into protocols on December 22nd.

The NHL Players Association said in a statement that it was “aware of the San Jose Sharks’ stated intentions to terminate Evander Kane’s contract” and that it “intends to challenge any such action by filing a complaint.” Kane’s agent, Dan Millstein, also said he would file a complaint if Kane acknowledged the waivers.

“The sharks do not have sufficient reason to take this action,” Milstein said chirp.

Kane, 30, joined Barracuda in November after removing waivers and being assigned to the AHL team. Prior to that, he was suspended for 21 games in October for violating NHL and NHLPA COVID-19 protocols. He did not attend San Jose training camp while the league investigated him for possibly attempting to fake his COVID-19 vaccination status and for an allegation by his estranged wife, Anna Kane, of domestic violence in the divorce file.

Kane was previously acquitted in a league investigation over allegations that he gambled on NHL games.

In five matches with Barracuda, he scored two goals and eight points. He’s been with the Sharks since 2018 after being traded from Buffalo Sabers.

As a result of the termination of his contract, Kane will lose $22.8 million. He hit a $7 million cap for this season, as well as for the next three years.

Kane’s agent, Dan Milstein, had no comment when reached via text message.
