The Nigerian Labor Congress has directed its members, affiliated unions, and civil society partners to prepare for the national protests planned for 27 January and 1 February against the proposed abolition of fuel subsidies by the federal government.

The conference also asked its affiliates across the country to mobilize their members in rallies and to ensure full compliance with the protests that swept across the country.

This was the highlight of the meeting with leaders of civil society organizations chaired by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ayuba Waba, at the Labor House, in Abuja, on Tuesday.

The member of the Central Labor Committee, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the heads and general secretaries of the affiliated unions pledged to mobilize their members for protests.

The labor leader said: “We have been asked to go and rally our members across the country ahead of the planned January 27 protests.

Each union has been asked to mobilize as many members as possible for the protests so that they are very prominent. The mammoth horde is just what we need for the planned protests.

Each union president and general secretary pledged to support the planned protests.

Civil society organizations work side by side with workers. The civil society organizations we have been working with are with us at the planned January 27 protests.”

Organized labor would not allow the proposed fuel subsidy to be scrapped, he said, adding: “If it happened it would be very disastrous for all of us in this country.”

Last year, the federal government announced a plan to eliminate fuel subsidies by the first quarter of this year.
