People so unhappy with the United States that they don’t want to be associated with it again, are given one last thing to grab while they wait to walk out the door, and they can’t even be bothered with the United States government.
You can say that you are not a US citizen, but in order to get the USA to recognize this, you must take an exit interview! Since the outbreak of the epidemic, the government has no time for those who are already unhappy.
For nearly two years, since the outbreak of the pandemic in March 2020, most US consular missions around the world have suspended expatriate services for those wishing to renounce US citizenship. The US Embassy in London, the largest of its kind in Western Europe, announced on its website that it is “currently unable to accept appointments for requests to lose citizenship” and cannot say when services will resume.
The US State Department says that giving up citizenship requires a face-to-face meeting with a government official, and that that is too risky given the coronavirus.
The delays led to a growing number of disgruntled citizens. By some accounts, there may be as many as 30,000 people out of the 9 million US citizens living abroad who want to start the abandonment process but can’t.
